Some pieces are constructed from “soft woods” like Pine, Fir, Cedar, and Redwood. These are beautiful materials but easily ding and dent, so typically I distress the surfaces before applying a waterborne finish. It is less toxic for me to apply, is a very durable professional finish. It is not cheap, but considering the time I have into making these pieces, it is worth it for me to use the best products that I have tried in thirty years of applying wood finishes.
Some pieces are constructed from “hard woods” like Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Maple or maybe exotic tropical lumber. I typically finish these with solvent based Polyurethane Varnish. It is nasty to apply, takes three times as long as waterborne finishes. I prefer it, because it make the natural grain and color pop out, as well as being an extremely hard, durable, water and alcohol proof finish. Again, for me it is worth the trouble and expense for it’s superior performance.
